Trails have always transported people. They’re an efficient means to move yourself from one place to another, or as a way to let go of your daily stresses. Trails can bring tourism to a community or increase its citizens’ outdoor physical activity. BikeOklahoma and the Oklahoma Bike Summit are excited to bring together transportation professionals and officials, public health staff, cyclists, and their champions to explore what Oklahoma can and what Oklahoma is doing to provide more trail building and trail use opportunities.
Oklahoma has stumbled in encouraging the use of abandoned railroad corridors as trails that can provide for safe walking and bicycling routes while revitalizing depressed areas. The sessions on Rails to Trails - the long and short of it; Moving Forward With Oklahoma RailTrails; and A Tale of Two Cities: Connecting the Dots explore ways for optimizing opportunities.
The Summit will highlight proven abilities in providing trails and safe bicycling routes to protect vulnerable users of all ages. Summit participants will be updated on the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s Active Transportation Plan and other important ODOT changes. The Advocacy 101 and Knowing Your Legal Rights session will demonstrate how working with officials at the community level can have greater impact on policy changes and implementation. Other sessions show the importance of supporting your local bike shop, speak on ebikes and if they are the right choice for you, showcase the Tulsa and Oklahoma City Trail systems, and much much more.
Time is given to speak with exhibitors and organizations that provide services, support, and counsel for better community and regional planning, policies, and facilities.
The Summit’s sessions are meant to not only inform but also inspire participants to do more and to ride more. Join us as we explore those possibilities.
