Route 66 - How to Help

The legislation for HB1706 has passed the transportation committee with a narrow margin ( 7 to 5 ). ODOT leadership has been against this bill, but it can be successful with your help. Please take a few minutes to contact your local representative and senator with your opinion.

Here is sample text that can be used to tell your legislator that you wish them to support passing the bill:

My name is _______________. I am a cycling enthusiast and a supporter of the Oklahoma state bicycle advocacy organization BikeOklahoma. I am in favor of the approval of HB1706: Directing ODOT to make application to designate Oklahoma 66 as a U.S. Bike Route.

This legislation will result in Oklahoma to become the third state to designate Route 66 as a U.S. Bike Route. Kansas and Missouri have already approved it, with California right behind.

Having Route 66 designated as a U.S. Bike Route will bolster Oklahoma's position as a top 10 state, will encourage tourism dollars to be spent, and show America that Oklahoma is a bike friendly state. Signage added to the route will assist in safe direction finding for local, national and international cyclists as they tour Oklahoma along the Route 66 corridor.

Additional information about the U.S. Bike Route program can be found at the BikeOklahoma website: www.BikeOK.org.

Thank you.
