BikeOklahoma History

Oklahoma Bike Summit, INC.,

Tradename BikeOklahoma

Administrative History

BikeOklahoma was formerly the tradename for the Oklahoma Bicycle Coalition, Inc. That name has since been transferred to the Oklahoma Bike Summit, Inc. The history of the Oklahoma Bicycle Coalition and Oklahoma Bike Summit follows.

The Oklahoma Bicycle Coalition, Inc was incorporated in 1993 as a member driven, all volunteer not-for-profit organization promoting bicycle safety through education and advocacy.  The Coalition had multiple successes over the years with more recent legislative changes that included ebike classification standards, the adoption of safer motor vehicle lane changing and passing regulations, and yield on stop sign-stop, then pass through on red traffic signals laws.  In addition, the Coalition was instrumental in getting Oklahoma Route 66 designated as a U.S. Bicycle Route, establishing an Oklahoma Department of Transportation Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and an online Oklahoma Bike Route Map.  It hosted the first Oklahoma Bike Summit in 2011, and continued to co-host six additional Summits through 2023.  The Coalition has worked with local organizations to provide educational activities such as bike rodeos and school programs.  In 2018, the Coalition adopted the tradename BikeOklahoma.

In December of 2025, the Oklahoma Bicycle Coalition dissolved with assets transferred to the Oklahoma Bike Summit, Inc.  Board members also migrated to the Summit board.

The Oklahoma Bike Summit, Inc. was incorporated in 2013 to continue the tradition of an Oklahoma bicycle summit first presented in 2011.  The organization focuses on promoting safe bicycling through education events and opportunities, and advocacy activities.  It is a 501c3 charitable organization with a member base. It may also receive tax-exempt donations and grants.  It successfully co-hosted six bike summits sharing the responsibility with the Oklahoma Bicycle Coalition. Most summits were two day events bringing together bike safety advocates, cyclists, transportation planners and engineers, and state and local officials.  It has represented Oklahoma at the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Summit for several years.  Currently it is working with community organizations to provide bicycling education for children.

The Oklahoma Bike Summit and Oklahoma Bicycle Coalition became one organization holding its first board meeting in January 2026.  Its mission is to continue providing educational opportunities and events while promoting safe bicycling infrastructure, legislation and policy, and community support.  Through a previous agreement the Summit adopted the tradename BikeOklahoma in June 2026.
