The Oklahoma Bicycling Coalition in partnership with the City of Edmond Planning Department and the University of Central Oklahoma's transportation office sponsored a League Cycling Instructor Seminar in Edmond the first weekend of October. Nine LCI candidates completed two and a half days of intense classroom and practical sessions displaying their teaching ability with the Smart Cycling curriculum, parking lot exercises, and on-road bicycling
Broadway and 2nd in Edmond will never be the same after each candidate navigated a busy four lane intersection multiple times. With everyone taking a turn as teacher demonstrating proper lane positioning for left, right and straight through bicycling it seemed there were dozens of bicyclists on the road coming from every direction for over an hour.
A night riding session allowed the candidates to see how different lighting systems and reflective clothing choices can help make a bicyclist more visible on the road. Adding huge value to the LCI Seminar was League of American Bicyclists Education Director Preston Tyree who was the seminar coach. Preston has been updating, revising, and in some cases overhauling the old Effective Cycling program since joining the LAB and it was fabulous to have his expertise in Edmond.

The OBC sponsored four LCIs: Mike Flennikin, Talesa Flennikin, and Kent Younge, all three are USCF Coaches, and John Carlisle from The Tulsa Hub where he works as their top mechanic. The City of Edmond/UCO sponsored Jan Fees, Rusty Fees, Fred Richard, Tracy Habluetzel, and Craig Cossey. Three "old-timer" LCIs assisted Preston and the class: Richard Hall from Tulsa, Susan Walker from Stillwater, and Pete Kramer from Oklahoma City. The experienced LCIs received the benefit of learning the new curricula as well. It was a great refresher. Expect to see more opportunities for Traffic Skills classes around the state in the coming months. There are now 26 LCIs in Oklahoma. To learn more about the League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling education programs, and see a complete list of Oklahoma's LCIs please visit the League of American Bicyclists.
An LCI Seminar is in the planning stages for Tulsa in the near future.
