Congratulations to recent Road 1 students!

The following bicyclists have recently completed the LAB Road 1 Course offered through Metro Tech in Oklahoma City:

Yvonne B. - Oklahoma City

Dolly D. - Oklahoma City

Paul L. - Fayetteville

Brenda - Wichita Falls

Joyce C. - Amarillo

KC - Fort Worth

Elaine W - Fort Worth

Byron S - Fort Worth

Lanc - Oklahoma City

Grace - Oklahoma City

Mike - Oklahoma City

Talesa - Oklahoma City

Kent - Oklahoma City

They've suffered winter cold and summer time heat! The classes started in the 30's and finished in the 90's. All are strong vehicular cyclists.

Many will be attending the LCI Seminar to become League Certified Instructors. Paul is a member of the Bicycle Coalition of the Ozarks (http://www.bconwa.com) and Brenda, Joyce, KC, Elaine, and Byron are Outreach Coordinators for the Texas Bicycle Coalition's Safe Routes to School program (http://www.biketexas.org).

In the past three years over 50 Oklahoma City (and out of state) cyclists have completed the Road 1 Course at Metro Tech. Isn't it time you became a bicycle driver instead of a bicycle rider?

Highlights of 2006:

1. 2005 Oklahoma Cyclist's Accident Survey - to identify causes and results of cycling accidents, and to use this data to improve cycling education. Nearly 80 cyclists responded with valid data.

2. Two LAB Road I Effective Cycling Classes at Metro Tech

3. Two Park Tool School Bicycle Mechanics Classes in partnership with Bike One (Budget Bicycles)

4. Opened discussions with the Oklahoma State Department of Education's Safe and Drug Free Schools Program to re-introduce Safe Cycling curriculum into elementary and secondary safety instruction for school children, and training for teachers. Provided SDE with advanced copies of the new LAB teach the teacher curriculum. Participated in a state-wide teleconference to present the case for increased awareness of cycling in school age children.

5. Partnered with Oklahoma Safe Kids Coalition and provided safe cycling tips and reviewed new Oklahoma Safe Passing law during two interviews on KYIS-FM.

6. Broke clavicle proving that a 50+ cyclist will attempt something that 30-something cyclists wouldn't dare!

Goals for 2007:

1. Release 3 new surveys:
General riding preferences to establish base-line data of where, what style, and how much all cyclists ride.
   2006 Road Cyclist Accident Survey
   2006 Mountain/Off-Road Cyclist Accident Survey
The purpose of these surveys will be to refine and expand on the 2005 data.

2. Analyze the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety 2005 accident summary and compare with the 2005 survey results. The purpose of this will be to determine the accuracy and correlation of Police reports with cyclists own self-reported accidents. (2005 data is released by DPS December 2006.)

3. Access Oklahoma Department of Health emergency room data on cycling related accidents.

4. Continue to offer as many opportunities for Effective Cycling classes, and expand into IPMBA training for law enforcement, EMS and private security services.

5. Stop hurting myself.
